I have been reading a lot of blog post lately on how to cheer up, so I decided to write my own on the matter. I came up with 13 ways that I deal with unhappiness, I hope these are help to any one who needs them.
1. Watch bad/ old monster movies.
Bela Lugosi's Dracula is absolute favorite! There is something about monsters wanting so desperately to be human that they deprive others of life or just them wanting "to exist" (as Frankensteins monster so lovingly put it) make me incredibly happy to be human and furthermore myself.
2. Coloring in coloring books.
It sounds childish, and it is! But focusing on the right color pony or on whether to stay in the lines or not is some how very soothing. Crayons scribbling on paper just clears my mind.
3. Make an angry playlist.
Knowing that the boys in Darkthrone had a nymph leave them stark naked in a wood or that Dave Mustaine is just another number in someone's little black book is comforting it means that everyone goes through hardships. I often find solace in that.
4. Playing Guitar (or faking it and playing Guitar Hero)
The vibrating in my ribcage and the sounds that assault my ears is some what like a musical massage. Even if it sounds terrible the strumming helps get out frustration, and if you often cheat and play Guitar Hero; the game often has adoring fans clapping for you which can make anyone feel like a rockstar. And who feels bad after that?!
5. Walking
Exercising is amazing for depression. I can't tell you how many walks I've gone on after a bad midterm or fights with my roommates (often with Ian Curtis blasting in my ears) and how after a night of cold air and tired legs I've often felt far better.
6. Self photo shoots
Dressing up always cheers me up. I firmly believe everyday should be halloween. So the whole process of coming up with a concept (such as princess peach as a medieval baroness or the idea of a demon and angel love story) then creating/ styling the outfit, make up and hair style. Not to mention taking the pictures! Oh the things I have done for a camera angle!
7. Stare in the mirror.
This probably... actually no... it IS really vain but personally I don't care. I have one person that I absolutely have to live the rest of my life with and that is me. I'd prefer to love her than spend a lifetime hating her. So when I'm down I stare at her wishing for a flatter stomach or smoother skin then convincing myself that none of those things matter. Who really cares? honest, when there's veggie cloning going on? Or star battle to watch? or blast beats to discover? There are far better ways to waste my time then hating myself.
8. Read something
I am such a sucker for Victorian love novels! I'm currently reading Pride and Prejudice (there should be a free version on Google Library check it out!) but other than that I often read what ever I can get my hands on. Hey, a good read can get you so enticed that you forget why you were down in the dumps in the first place.
9. Let yourself be sad.
Take a sep back and wonder why your even sad. Is it for a petty reason? Are you just being selfish? Honestly, I am always reflecting on the things that make me feel the way I do, and when I am sad for something pompous I tell myself so. If it's a genuine reason to be sad (in other words, something that isn't me being bitter over something small) then it's alright and I can feel bad and move on. Sadness and frustration are apart of life, they are natural and sometimes we just have to let them run their course. They eventually pass and move on.
10. Stop caring about it.
A friend of mine Dj R0b07 is the master of this concept. frankly, most frustrations aren't worth your time, because your time is precious as is mine. If you stop caring about certain topics and grudges often the people involved fade into the distance.
11. Let it out
Sing it, talk it, scream it, or write it. However you need to express it, do it. Sometimes venting is the best way to let it out. Not everyone is adept at inner monologues if your not one of those people it is no big deal, let your venting be heard.
12. Find something ridiculously cute.
Like sickenly cute, seriously beyond your expectations cute. Go on, google Kawaii or Hello Kitty or something. I have no idea why but looking at insanely pink really sparkly crazy girly adorable thing makes me feel better. Maybe it's a girl thing.
13. Go out, get drunk, party, HAVE FUN!
Lastly, go out with your friends! I have been pulled out of a funk many a time because I was convinced to get out of bed and go get drunk. A good night of dancing, "that's what she said" jokes and crazy arguments over things like whether the Green Lanturn would defeat Batman will lighten anyone's spirits. (By the by if you don't have one, drop us a line, we will probably invite you.) Also, NO ONE BEATS THE BAT.

Obsessions: Mermaids
Every other week or so I randomly become obsessed with things. For two weeks in December I was learning everything I could about the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland! (Did you know that the one in Euro Disney in France is completely different then the one here in California?)
But this time it's mermaids. I've been looking at old stories, like the original tale of the little mermaid. (It's here if you want to read it... http://hca.gilead.org.il/li_merma.html ) or looking up lovely ladies like Hannah Fraiser, who is a real mermaid!
But of course I had to draw from the epic Disney influence in my life.
These are taken from the Disneyland facebook, they are of the amazing little ride at California Adventure Park. Disney's version of this epic tale is far nicer than the original. The little mermaid gets her tongue cut out for one, and secondly she never ends up with the prince! He marries someone else and she basically dies and then gets turned into some type of angel/ wind spirit type thing. It's actually pretty nuts.
That story however isn't even the tip of the iceberg, or coral if you prefer a pun... even though that was kind of a bad one... anyway, there are a whole slew of tales about mermaids and water spirits. In certain Asian places a mermaid can only become human by eating human meat, but on the opposite side humans become immortal if they eat mermaid meat.
In old English lore, mermaids often taught men about medicine and every once in a while they would pop up to ask sailors to move their boats so that they could get into their cave like homes. But of course there are the far more sinister talk of women that sang to lure men towards the water so that they could pull them under and drown them. As well as of women that were impregnated by fish men.
I saw a movie called SHE CREATURE ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0274659/ ) which was a cult classic in the 50's and then was turned into the movie in the link above. It's actually rather good, it's about a crew who capture a mermaid only to learn that she turns into a monster and kills them as well as hypnotizing the only woman on board to do her bidding. It's rad, check it out on your Netflix if you can.
I'm not sure what it is that has drawn me to these mystical creatures of the deep this summer, but it seems like it's not exactly a fleeting fancy. I was a swimmer in high school and have been a strong one from my infancy. I've always loved being under the water, I can fully understand why people would want to live under there.
There is a reason that I love this game so much. The concept is beyond comprehension. "I love you Mr. Bubbles." Perhaps one day something like this will actually exist and I will be able to look out my window at sharks and mer-people and the like. But until then I'll just have to keep swimming and pretending I have a long shimmering tale.

Even if I was one I wouldn't swim with sharks... she is a brave girl. Anyway, I've been doing a lot of make up looks based off these types of colors and ideas of waves in the sunset or sunken treasure. I've been really inspired by images like these.
as well as from the girls in the new Pirates of the Caribbean.

Disclaimer:
This blog is foremost a journey and partly is a personal experiment.
It's main purpose is to serve as a self love journal (trench around galadarling.com for more information on that). Because recent events have forced me down yet another rabbit hole of confusion and loss on the part of lifestyle plus the whole "who am I" critique.
With that said I'm starting off today with a list of awesome things I found today...
Topless Robot shows us "The Avengers" as we have yet to see them collected... MMM Capt. America.. http://www.toplessrobot.com/2011/07/sdcc_the_avengers_posters_assembled.php
This adorable lady just some how makes me feel warm and fussy inside.

Norway has always been brutal, here is the evidence.

And finally... VEGAN BLACK METAL CHEF
