1. Start with any shirt that is at least two sizes bigger than your normal size. (a men type of shirt is preferable, it works better in my opinion.)
2. Turn your shirt inside out and put it on yourself.( A lot of people want you the cut the sides here, but don't do it, because it is much easier to just mark it without cutting it.)
3. Pinch the sides of your shirt until you can feel your body, then mark the sides (I do it with a piece of chalk but a marker or safety pins or something works just as well, you need to see the lines though, so marking is crucial)It is a good idea to make the markings near your chest because that tends to be the biggest part of you.
4. Now that you have marked the sides, draw a straight line down the sides to the end of your shirt like so.
5. Stitch up the shirt along the line you just made, I like to do it with a sowing machine because it's faster, but if you don't know how to use a sowing machine you can hand stitch it.(BTW, you need to stitch up to the sleeve seam line that is naturally on the shirt, so go from the sleeve seam to the bottom of the shirt)
6. Put your shirt back on after you've sown it, to see if you like that fit and to see if the stitching will pop or not.(I suggest trying it on inside out and then normal side out a few times to test it.)
7. If you like the fit, then take off your shirt and cut away the access fabric off the sides. (In the picture the access would be on the right of the stitch line, the left of the line is your dress DO NOT CUT THAT, you will ruin your shirt)
8. Now you can cut the sleeves and neck line of your shirt.(some people cut the bottom as well and that is up to you but I think the fraying gets annoying)
9. Flip your shirt back out to show the logo. The end product should look like a regular tank dress. Then wear and party!
I hope this was a fun little project. :)
Love and stitches,
